Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the interrelationships between plasma calcium, parathyroid hormone, and phosphorus.

  2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various pharmacologic agents used for treating hyperphosphatemia.

  3. Provide recommendations for the long-term management of calcium and phosphorus balance in the treatment of renal osteodystrophy.
